Crumber value has been always fluctuated up and down for years since
it’s invented in 1939 by John Henry Miller, the owner of a restaurant in
Baltimore.
The normal price for the crumber is $5 to $20 and depends largely on
which type you’re picking.
You may be interested in an electronic crumber or a more
traditional one. Obviously, the electric one cost high then the traditional style.
Vintage Crumber
Value
The value of the vintage crumber range from $20 - $40. It depends
on where you’re buying it from and how old it actually is. There is a modern
type of it which I’ve talk about in the last section of this post.
Why to Use a
Vintage Crumber?
The reason behind using a vintage crumber is pretty straight
forward. Most restaurant owners want their restaurant to look unique and that’s
one of the main reasons behind it.
Vintage crumber not only look good but they also have an expensive
feel to it.
You can easily draw in front of a customer to make a very good
impression on them.
Crumbers are not usually used in many restaurant and part of the
reason is because not all restaurants comes under the category of “fine dining”.
Even after that, rarely a few fine dining restaurant owners feel
the need of buying crumbers for their waiters to use.
In my opinion it’s a very good investment to make.
Not only it helps cleaning the table immediately after your
customers left but, also it helps maintain a good vibe and impression for the upcoming
customers who may pick that exact table.
It’s a one-time investment because crumbers hardly get any rust.
One of the reason is that they are made that way.
The material is quite good.
And another reason is that they are naturally lubricated through
little oily fingers of waiters J
Why Vintage Crumber
Value Kept On Increasing?
This is a very simple concept.
Usually when a product doesn’t have an upcoming versions they’ll
bump in price as the times goes on.
For example, if you were to buy a phone now in 2019 it will for
sure decrease its price in 2029.
But, if you were to buy gold right now it will for sure keep
getting much expensive at the time you’ll try to sell it in 2029.
So the things that don’t improve overall in terms of yearly versions
and added features etc, they’ll get much pricier even after a few years.
And that’s the same thing for vintage crumbers.
They are made with quality material way back and that’s why even
if they cost $10 5 years ago they are worth $50 for the same piece now.
But, we can’t complain they are definitely worth it.
When The Vintage
Crumbers Cost Has Increased The Most?
As vintage crumbers are made up of anodized aluminum which at the
time of writing this article (3 November 2019) cost around $2 to $4 per kg but,
about 5 years ago in 2014
Considering the cost of it at the early ages was way lesser then
you’d think. In 1930s, the aluminum and all its versions was just for 20 cents
a pound.
That’s just 44 cents per kg.
Although, it was way expensive before 1930s (even
expensive then gold).
So now because aluminum is known for its usage and keep getting
used in all sort of products and by manufacturing companies, you should expect a
crumber especially of a vintage type to be of a higher in price range.
What Value Can You
Get If You Have One And Want To Sell?
If you want to sell your vintage crumber and want to know its
value then I should say you can sell it for about $30. Obviously it’ll depend on
a lot of factors such as if it’s rusty or not, the shape, how much it’s already
used, its shine, feel and quality all will add up to $.
I calculated an average of these 3 products to give you an idea:
You can also sell it to your friend who is already running a successful
restaurant since he/she is the one might be giving you a better price from
others.
Selling is not a problem. It’ll sell for that price but, finding
the right people might get tough.
Also it depends largely on the quality of crumbers you have. If
you have just a one crumber then it you might have to sell to someone who likes
to hoard for vintage things. Online store listing is also a great option like you’ve
already seen the Etsy links I listed above.
To sell to restaurant owners you have to have quantity because
they require quantity especially when the restaurant is known and famous in the
town. All waiters will have one so selling just one to them doesn’t makes sense
unless they want to decorate it as a showpiece somewhere in the middle of the restaurant
or a most traffic place like entrance or stairs.
Modern Vintage Crumbers,
Does It Even Makes Sense?
Because of the demand there are manufacturers who are producing
modern looking vintage crumbers which are not originally vintage.
The look is the same and they give it a pale gold look so it looks
real but, in reality it’s not an antique piece. But, that type is also very
beautiful and sold out genuinely as a “modern vintage crumber”.
The artistic design on it also looks good and legit.
But, the way you’ll identify a real antique crumber is by looking
at it closely. You’ll surely find a few scratches here and there even if it’s
cared well for years.
It can get caught a few scratches during home shifting or just replacing
items inside home.
Another way is it to look for its paleness. Not a regular pale which
affects the whole crumber but, the one which has identifiable pale spots on
them. Not a necessary sign but, might get you pretty close in getting a real
vintage one.
So to differ, I researched the top 3 products that are of rare type
and they are the original crumbers of 19-20th centuries so here they
are.
These are the same links I pasted earlier.
Please note there are just 3 of these I’ll keep on updating them
as the new products come:
